History of the Holy Korean Martyrs Parish Community
:::
In 1983,
about 10 Catholic Korean families who had been regular
attendants at Blessed Sacrament Church, asked Fr.
McDonald to take
over their
spiritual care. The Korean
community would contribute with their choir to make
the liturgy a livelier one.
A bond
of love between the community and Fr. McDonald was
created, and this bond is still kept today.
On October 16th of 1984, the Archdiocese
of Ottawa officially accepted the Catholic Korean
Community as an entity ¡°sui generis¡± with certain
juridical
autonomy. Rev. Fathers Donald Macdonald, Joseph O¡¯Donnel
and Vincent Pereira continued taking care of the spiritual
needs of
the community
and assured the community¡¯s connection to the diocesan
community.
On July 13th of 1987, the community
got from Revenue Canada the status of charitable organisation
and was given its particular registration
number
in order to accept donations. During this period,
new people joined in helping the Catholic Korean Community,
such as Fr. Vincent
Pereira, MSG. David
Corkery, Fr. Laslie Laszlo, Fr. Kim Kee Hong as well
as Sr. Peggy Ramsden.
It was on February of 1995 that
the Archdiocese of Ottawa officially ¡°baptised¡± the
community with the title of ¡°Ottawa Korean Catholic
Community
of Holy Korean Martyrs¡±. Fr. Kim Jin Hyung(John) was
now the principal responsible of the community. With
Fr. Kim,
the community
ceased to worship at Blessed Sacrament church. The
community wished to worship in their own language.
After a period of wandering around, and
since Fr. Kim had left Ottawa to pursue higher studies
in Rome, Fr. Antonio Ostan, OMI, assisted by
Sr. Loraine
Rival, gathered the community and started saying mass
at the gym at Deschatelets, an Oblate Residence. This
was February of
1996. Due
to some difficulties in using the space, Fr. Antonio
had to take the community to the chapel of Saint Paul
University until finally in
November
of 1996, Fr. Gahegan welcome the community at Saint
Theresa¡¯s. During this time the community grew considerably,
and
Fr. Antonio
encouraged different groups to begin their activities:
the Bible study group, the Legion of Mary and the
Cursillo movement among
others.
In January 1999 the Archbishop appointed
Fr. Antonio Egiguren OFM, a student at Saint Paul¡¯s
and a former missionary in Korea who could
speak the
language, to be the community¡¯s new spiritual servant.
In these later years since 1999 the community experienced
an
unprecedented
growth
of new Korean families joining the high tech industry
of Ottawa.
In June
23, and due to human and pastoral needs for re-organising
of resources, the Archdiocese of Ottawa decided to
give the
Catholic
Korean community the Christ Roi church, site at Argyle,
with the new pious advocation of ¡°Holy Korean Martyrs".
